Guilds, consisting of various members scattered throughout the world, are a living breathing machine. They come in all shapes and sizes and are greatly influenced by the folks who sign up under its name. Having been both a leader and a member of dozens of guilds throughout my gaming vocation, I’ve noticed that there seems to be undeniable individuals who attract members like flies to honey. Often times these people are reluctant to lead; it’s up to you to identify and embolden them to take on the role. Try to find somebody with these attributes: Wittiness: A person that can keep you laughing and divert your interest from problems or complications is worth having in a place of power. The kind of humor that isn’t childish and hints at an underlying concern in making people glad. Self expression is your item of interest. Sarcasm works well too, especially when used in good taste. Availability: Establishing a reliable presence is key. We all have real world responsibilities, of course, but your leader should have a presence that others respect and can count on. If the person you’ve nominated to run your guild fits flawlessly but doesn’t log on, you may want to consider them for a less demanding spot on your council. Conflict Resolve: Why does it always seem that gamers today have no problem being completely absorbed in anonymity and selfishness? A good leader can identify the conflicts that need to be addressed and shut them down before they result in damaged guild reputation. Conversely, the leader shouldn’t try to fix every disagreement that takes place. Despite the supposition that many video games are perceived “childish”, I would hope that most of your members are indeed adults so they can handle conflict accordingly. Diplomacy: Contender guilds can be a pain, especially if they’re more successful and aren’t afraid to let you know it. Your leader should be able to create allies with stronger guilds as opposed to creating a hostile competition. I’ve had the most success befriending these guilds via common goals – try to identify what makes them tick and use it to an advantage. benefits for both parties can always be realized when your leader spins a suggestion to look more favorable for the other party. Loyalty: Competition is a real stake in the heart of small guilds. Make sure the person you put in charge of your guild is dedicated; if they jump ship for a bigger, better team then your minnow may be lost. It’s often easier to tell where someone’s loyalty lies by seeing how committed to the game they are. Guild managers who spend personal time and money on things like voice-chat or website hosting are essentially reassuring you that they’re here to stay. After all, would you throw your hard-earned money at something just to walk away a few months down the road? I’m going to go with no. With every generation of MMORPG player becoming more self-centered, it’s difficult to find quality leadership. If you fancy yourself a leader and found yourself nodding your head as you read this post, remember that your job isn’t building an individual character ” that will come with time. Your job is to build a community where every member’s success can, in some way, shape or form, shine positively back on you. Are you ready to lead? Do you have what it takes to be a true leader? It takes outstanding leadership to compete in the competitive gaming arena! Thanks for reading.
