Requiem for a Heavyweight: Solemn account of boxer, Quinn, whose ring occupation is over, pushing him into corruption and degradation. His sleazy supervisor Gleason, understanding teacher Rooney, and Harris as unrealistic city employee are all fine. Cast includes Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris, Nancy Cushman, Madame Spivy, and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). (100 minutes, 1952)

The Sea Wolf: Sharp Jack London story of fierce although intellectual ocean commander Robinson fighting a battle of wits as unintentional passenger Knox, a brash sailor Garfield, and an escapee Lupino try to flee. The Educators: A verbose and overlong, sarcastic investigation of partisan idealism and hypocrisy in current Germany. A set of boisterous youthful liberals (Briihl, Erceg) see themelves as 21st-century Robin Hoods, which gives them a reprieve to crack into the houses of the internet-heeled Problems surface while Erceg’s lady friend (Jentsch) partakes in one of their adventures. (137 minutes, 2004)

The Great Moment: Perplexed biography of anesthesia pioneer wavers from comedy to drama. The film is uselessly filled with aggravating flashbacks. Cast includes Joel McCrea, Harry Carey, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Gmdy Sullon, and Louis Jean Heydt. (83 minutes, 1944)

The Hi-Lo Country: Tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the identical lady and she’s already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinship, this film has so much going for it (containing Harrelson’s wonderful behavior as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton’s cinematography) that it’s a pity it doesn’t hit the bull’s-eye and Arquette is so boring. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)

The Age of Innocence: Humble although powerful rendition of Edith Wharton’s novel in reference to an obstructed romance between an involved lawyer and a divorcee, in 1870s Manhattan. Starts off with a super Jazz Age montage opening, then gets slowed down in static, stagy therapy as older Boles interconnects the tale of his ill-fated event to his grandson. Cast includes Irene Dunne, John Boles, Lionel Atwill, Helen Westley, Laura Wish Teams, and Julie Haydon. (81 minutes, 1934)
